A Midnight Wish
Emma had always believed in fresh starts. For her, the New Year wasn't just a celebration — it was a chance to rewrite the story. This year, though, the end of December brought nothing but loneliness. She had moved to a new city for work, leaving behind her close friends and familiar places.
On December 31st, she stood in the town square, surrounded by strangers bundled up against the winter cold. The air was filled with laughter, the scent of roasted chestnuts, and the crackle of anticipation. Yet, Emma felt detached.
She looked up at the giant clock looming over the square. Five minutes until midnight. Everyone around her seemed to have someone — friends, family, or lovers. She pulled her scarf tighter and sighed, whispering to herself, "Next year, let me not be alone."

Just then, someone bumped into her, spilling hot cocoa onto her gloves.
"I'm so sorry!" A man with unruly dark hair and a sheepish smile scrambled to offer napkins. "I wasn’t looking where I was going."
Emma glanced at him, her annoyance melting into amusement. His earnest expression was impossible to stay mad at.
"It's okay," she said, dabbing at her gloves. "No harm done."
"Let me make it up to you," he said, holding out a fresh cup of cocoa. "I bought an extra one by accident. Guess it was meant for you
Sometimes, the best resolutions aren’t planned but simply found in the warmth of a new connection.
